Do you dump something if it becomes trendy?

I love these spaces - and a lot of them embody things that I have been doing and loving for a long time - fur, Moroccan rugs, mirrored furniture, exotic inlaid mirrors, vintage lighting, pictures hung on bookshelves. But lately I have been seeing too much of the same things. Do you dump something that you love because it becomes trendy? I know that it doesn't lose its beauty simply because more people love it, but as Interior Designers we pride ourselves on staying ahead of everyone else and get really depressed when everyone has the same things we do.... for example - I wanted a Beni Ourain Moroccan rug FOREVER and finally made it happen. Now, everyone from Anthropologie to West Elm has Beni Ourain rugs. I still love mine and it is still classic and beautiful, but you never want to look like you follow trends. What do you think? Dump or keep?

Keep, of course.

I don't need my home to be so ahead of the curve that I give up things I love because they've been done. Everything has been done... I think instead it's about how you pair and edit.

I think you have to remember you are a trend SETTER not follower so be proud of your purchases and love them even more! This is of course coming from someone that bought a beni ourain after you, from your source!

Keep doing what you love--there's a reason others love it too.

I totally know how you feel! I say, keep it if you still love it, but sometimes if you see it everywhere you get sick of it...That is when you should dump it :)

Thanks, girls - I do still love my rug and think it is a forever piece! You are so right, Naomi, it is all about how you put things together to create your own personal style...

Definitely keep! I get the sense that you're extremely selective about what you bring into your home and you only buy the things you love. You love that rug. Don't give up on Beni!

Its part of the curse of being in this business. I find I buy things I love, and I rotate and edit so frequently that I might take something that I am feeling "Oversaturated" with out of circulation for a bit, and a few months later go back to it and if I still love it, add it back.

I know it feels that nothing is sacred or original when it comes to interior design. You just need to do what makes you happy, and its that mix you create that is unique. And if someone copies you, thats a serious compliment.
AND DON'T TOSS THAT RUG GIRL!

I think if you love it...you love it. Unfortunately, with the way information travels these days, it seems that just as something is "in" its "out" at almost exactly the same time. I find it almost exhausting to try to keep up! I'm not a decorator, but I do love interior design and fashion. Lately I've decided to buy what I truly %100 LOVE. That usually means it will stand the test of time...at least for me!

I agree with Erika, you are most def the trend setter and therefore you should keep it! Every time I look at a piece I love it makes me happy, regardless. I hope that yours does the same and reminds you of how badly you coveted it before it even graced your floor.

I agree with Naomi! Couldn't of said it better. I know what ya mean though... I love all the graphic prints out there right now but i feel like they're SO trendy!! So I debate on whether to go there. I do still love my ghost chair but dang is it everywhere!! (for what it's worth, i don't think any of your spaces look "trendy" just FABULOUS!) - Boo

I agree that you should keep something if it makes you happy and dont worry about whether its trendy or not. And mix in some new and not trendy items-maybe that will mix it up a bit!!

absolutely not! i don't buy a lot of trendy stuff in the first place, and if i do its b/c i really love it and have thought long and hard about spending the money on it. so i'm not going to toss it out b/c everyone is doing it! and really, "everyone" isn't real people...its the design mags and blogs i read all day. to me, getting rid of something you love b/c its trendy is just as bad as buying something you don't love simply b/c its trendy.
